Chenonceau Castle at 30 minutes

Built in 1513, fitted out and transformed by women with very different temperaments (Diane de Poitiers, Catherine de Médicis, Louise de Lorraine…), it is nicknamed “the castle of the Ladies”.

On June 20, 1940, the Germans occupied Chenonceau where they stayed for several months, and decided to evacuate it. The German authorities forbid access to the property because the building straddles the demarcation line. This is particularly true of the gallery on the second floor, which was used by the Resistance to get many people into the free zone.
